Quick answer: A SIP calculator in Excel estimates what a monthly investment will grow to. The formula is FV = P × [((1 + i)n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i), where P is the monthly SIP, i is the monthly return (annual return ÷ 12) and n is the number of months. In Excel it’s simply =FV(12%/12, 240, -10000, 0, 1). That gives about ₹99.9 lakh for ₹10,000 a month for 20 years at 12%. Increase the SIP by 10% every year and the same plan reaches about ₹1.99 crore. The free Xplorexcel SIP calculator shows this for your own numbers, along with inflation, tax and a goal planner.
Key takeaways
- Shows total invested, estimated value and wealth gained, using the same method as popular online SIP calculators.
- Step-up SIP: raise your SIP by a set percentage every year and see how much more you could build.
- Shows the value in today’s money (after inflation) and after long-term capital-gains tax.
- A goal planner tells you the monthly SIP, or the lump sum, you need for a goal.
- A year-wise growth table up to 40 years, a SIP ready reckoner and a chart.

What is a SIP?
A SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) means investing a fixed amount in a mutual fund at regular intervals, usually every month. Each instalment buys units at that day’s price, so you invest steadily without trying to time the market. Over long periods, returns are earned on earlier returns as well, which is what makes long SIPs grow so much.
SIP calculation formula
FV = P × [((1 + i)n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i)
- P = monthly SIP amount
- i = monthly rate = expected annual return ÷ 12 (12% ÷ 12 = 1%)
- n = number of monthly instalments (20 years = 240)
- The final × (1 + i) is there because each SIP is invested at the start of the month
In Excel, the built-in FV function does the same calculation:
=FV(12%/12, 240, -10000, 0, 1) → ₹99,91,479
The last argument, 1, tells Excel that payments are made at the start of each period.
Step-up SIP: why raising your SIP every year matters
Your income usually rises every year, so your SIP can too. A step-up (also called a top-up) increases the SIP by a fixed percentage each year. Here is the same ₹10,000 SIP at 12% for 20 years:
| Plan | Total invested | Estimated value | Wealth gained |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain SIP, ₹10,000 every month | ₹24,00,000 | ₹99,91,479 | ₹75,91,479 |
| 10% step-up (₹10,000 rising to ₹61,159) | ₹68,72,988 | ₹1,98,88,684 | ₹1,30,15,696 |
With the step-up, the final value roughly doubles. In today’s money (with 6% inflation) the ₹1.99 crore is worth about ₹62 lakh, which is why the template shows both figures.

SIP return table: value of a monthly SIP at 12%
| Monthly SIP | 10 years | 15 years | 20 years | 25 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1,000 | ₹2,32,339 | ₹5,04,576 | ₹9,99,148 | ₹18,97,635 |
| ₹5,000 | ₹11,61,695 | ₹25,22,880 | ₹49,95,740 | ₹94,88,175 |
| ₹10,000 | ₹23,23,391 | ₹50,45,760 | ₹99,91,479 | ₹1,89,76,351 |
| ₹25,000 | ₹58,08,477 | ₹1,26,14,400 | ₹2,49,78,698 | ₹4,74,40,877 |
The SIP Table sheet covers ₹1,000 to ₹50,000 a month over 5 to 30 years, at any return you type in.

Goal planner: how much SIP do I need?
Start from the goal instead of the SIP. For example, a child’s higher education that costs ₹25 lakh today, needed in 15 years, with education costs rising 8% a year and ₹2 lakh already saved:
| Future cost of the goal | ₹79,30,423 |
| ₹2 lakh already saved will grow to | ₹11,99,160 |
| Still needed from SIP | ₹67,31,263 |
| SIP needed, starting amount with a 10% yearly step-up | ₹7,800 a month |
| SIP needed with no step-up | ₹13,400 a month |
| Or a one-time lump sum today | ₹11,23,000 |

Tax on SIP returns (equity mutual funds)
For equity mutual funds held for more than 12 months, long-term capital gains (LTCG) are taxed at 12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 lakh in a financial year. Gains on units held for 12 months or less are short-term and taxed at 20%. Each SIP instalment has its own holding period. The template’s tax estimate treats all gains as long-term, which is a simplification. The rates are editable in case the rules change.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate SIP returns in Excel?
Use =FV(rate/12, years*12, -monthly SIP, 0, 1). For example, =FV(12%/12, 240, -10000, 0, 1) gives ₹99,91,479 for ₹10,000 a month for 20 years at 12%. This template also handles step-up, lump sum, inflation and tax.
What is a step-up SIP?
A SIP whose amount rises by a fixed percentage every year, for example 10%. It helps your investment keep pace with a growing income and can roughly double the final value over 20 years compared with a flat SIP.
What will ₹5,000 a month in SIP become in 20 years?
At an assumed 12% annual return, about ₹49.96 lakh, of which ₹12 lakh is your own investment. Actual returns vary with the market.
Why does my SIP calculator result differ from the fund’s actual return?
The calculator assumes a fixed return every month. Real funds go up and down, so actual results will differ. Fund statements show actual returns as XIRR.
Is the SIP amount guaranteed?
No. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks. The calculator only shows estimates based on the return you assume.
Can I use this SIP calculator in Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the .xlsx file to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets. It has no macros.
